After a long and successful time with notable Scottish miserablists

Arab Strap, Malcolm Middleton has gone some way to creating a name for

himself with his solo recordings. 'Waxing Gibbous' is his fifth long

player, and his fourth in as many years. Still riding from the brief

celebrity status foundupon the release of his Christmas song 'We're All

Going To Die' from 2007, Middleton explores slightly lighter territory

Release Notes:



Having seemingly being on the edge of the scene for a long time Slow

Club finally get around to releasing 'Yeah So' their debut album.

Forming in 2006 and releasing a slew of singles and an EP through the

ever reliable Moshi Moshi over the years and the Sheffield duo have

built up a ground swelling of support whose vintage record players will

be awaiting the release of 'Yeah So' with itchy needles. The acoustic

two-piece use their limited resources to great effect, they bash and

clatter a variety of instruments and can also bring the hush too with

sublime intimacy. Obvious comparisons to White Stripes more stripped

back moments are just that, however album opener 'When I Go' has the

child like simplicity and innate sweetness of a 'White Blood Cells'

Release Notes:



The widely celebrated music of MISS DERRINGER mine the dark and

oft-times twisted outlaw landscape of punk disaffectation, New Wave

disdain, 50s girl-group attitude and hip-shaking pop. The new album

WINTER HILL bottles their unique formula and serves it up straight, no

chaser. "Our music is like the Shangri La's duking it out with Duane

Eddy and The Misfits," explains guitarist Morgan Slade. "Visually,

someone said we are like a band from the movie Beetlejuice... and

oddly, it fits!"



Launching with the playful opening track "Click Click Bang Bang" with a

propulsive upright bassline and Blondie-styled shimmy, the album kicks

off with a 'bang' and doesn't let up. From the twang-fueled girl-group

send-up "Black Tears" to the velvety forelorn angst of "Death by

Desire" to the dramatic "Drop Shot Dead" (which could be a lost song

from West Side Story), the album creates an almost visceral aural

backdrop to a story that doesn't even really have a storyline.



Loosely based on the infamous 1960 mob war between the Winter Hill gang

and their rivals that took place in Boston, this isn't quite a concept

album as it is a period piece. "As I read more and more about the gang

(damn Wikipedia!), I realized that a lot of the music we find

inspiration from like the Shangri Las, Ronnettes, etc. was probably

coming out of the car stereos while a gangster in the back seat wrapped

piano wire around the neck of a gangster in the front seat," explains

Morgan.

Release Notes:

While a completely different species, musically speaking, than Animal
Collective's monolithic Merriweather Post Pavilion, the Dirty
Projectors's Bitte Orca is every bit that album's equal in terms of
navigating uncharted sonic territory. Virtuosic but playful,
unpredictable yet accessible, it's not a genre album, encapsulating too
many ideas to be filed conveniently under an "indie" or "experimental"
tag. Bitte Orca is a careening, three-way balancing act between the
finger-picked experimentation of the Books, the math rock of Battles,
and Of Montreal's gallivanting pop. If that sounds a bit scattershot in
theory, the band smelts its influences into a nearly unrecognizable
alloy, one that gleams with a newness that is realized in that
ever-so-slender window of opportunity where each member of a band is
firing on all cylinders.

The sound that bandleader Dave Longstreth has created on Bitte Orca is
one of a chugging, smoke-huffing machine. Songs like "Temecula Sunrise"
and "Useful Chamber" jerk and cough like so many churning cogs,
occasionally driving their tempos up or down unexpectedly. One of the
few exceptions to this nearly uniform musical theme is "Stillness Is
the Move": The organic odd-man-out, it's a candy-coated pop song that
might be what Mariah Carey would sound like accompanying a snake
charmer's flute; the exotic loop that opens the song is hypnotizing,
and band members Angel Deradoorian and Amber Coffman coo like pop
princesses lost in a New Delhi marketplace. "Remade Horizon" opens with
a summery folk trot before a synth dart tears through the acoustic
guitars, making way for an emerging, corkscrew prog riff. Finally, the
song culminates in a staggering vocal hocket courtesy of Deradoorian.

The Dirty Projectors have always possessed the qualities needed to make
a great album, but until now, the band has never demonstrated those
traits all at once. There have been moments of expert musicianship and
melodic genius sprinkled throughout their career (2007's Rise Above, a
reimagining of Black Flag's Damaged, foreshadowed some of the band's
bravery, even if it was a bit misguided), but they never found a strong
enough songwriting foundation. They've done it here, and Bitte Orca is
close to a masterpiece.

Andy, ce serait par ces mots de la chanteuse sur Merry

Dance, troisième titre du disque : "Should I ever lead

you/my steps would never deceive you". "Si je devais

mener, jamais je ne vous décevrais". L'invitation du

groupe tient largement ses promesses. Diving With Andy

accède ici à de nouvelles sphères : le trio français vient

directement se placer dans la descendance de grands

artistes anglo-saxons comme Harry Nilsson ou Margo Guryan,

à la croisée des chemins entre pop baroque et folk

charnel. Aucune racine française ? On pense bien sûr à

Serge Gainsbourg, sauf que Diving With Andy ne vit pas

dans la nostalgie des sixties ou seventies, leur musique

ambitieuse s'inscrit parfaitement dans notre époque. Leur

projet ? Façonner une pop audacieuse, toujours à mi-chemin

entre Paris et Londres. Le trio, aujourd'hui parisien, est

composé de Juliette Paquereau, Rémy Galichet et Julien

Perraudeau



Sugar Sugar est façonné comme un recueil de nouvelles,

profondes et légères, enjouées et mélancoliques, comme un

film intimiste anglais aux arrangements classieux,

l'écriture de Juliette ayant tout le charme de sa voix. «

Quand Rémy nous envoie ses maquettes, chacun se raconte ce

qu'il voit. » Ces histoires ont donné dix splendides

morceaux de pop soyeusement orchestrée, de folk

délicieusement voluptueux. Juliette raconte souvent

l'histoire de filles sur le départ ("Nether Town"), ou

dans le flou ("Sugar Sugar"). Des filles qui, sur un

malentendu, prennent le train en sens inverse ("You don't

have to cry"). Des chansons d'adieu : "Farewell". Rémy et

Julien poursuivent leur exploration musicale, inspirés par

le soft-rock de Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young et des

Carpenters, illuminés par le songwriting de Colin

Blunstone et Caetano Veloso ; ils continuent de composer

les chansons merveilleuses qui feront rester Juliette. «

   Crazy Power is the robust counterpart to Oracle Band's  Life Is Legal EP .

   The self-produced debut was recorded in 2008 at Toronto's Giant Studios in

   piecemeal fashion. The new disc continues to show Josh Reichmann (of Tangiers

   fame) dismantling his post-punk bent for a psychedelic stranglehold on early

   funk and soul records. Recorded with Ian McGettigan, the album's one-sheet

   says the album references 1970s heavies like "Lennon, Robert Wyatt,

   Funkadelic, the E-Street Band and T-Rex's outsider glam." That list should

   give the band's onstage ballerina (ex-National Ballet dancer Laura Bolton)

   plenty to gambol to on the road. Reichmann was joined in the sessions by Ian

   McGettigan on bass, James Sayce (Tangiers) on bass, Sebastien Grainger on

   drums, Steve Singh on keyboards, and Joseph Shabason on sax.

   Lord Cut-Glass, the solo incarnation of ex-Delgado Alun Woodward, takes his

   maiden album bow for Chemikal Underground on June 22nd.…



   Sometimes bashful, occasionally imbued with curmudgeonly bluster, and yet

   always lifted by humorous life learned truisms, Lord Cut-Glass strikes a

   dashing figure of musically inventive bravado. Galloping percussion, waltzes

   and marches, promenades of male and female harmony, delicate and serene

   creations punctuated by casual profanity and shot through with brazenly

   hilarious words-to-the-wise.



   It is an album comprising one man’s refined grasp of the musical form, an

   idiosyncratic pursuit that’s unmistakably in the lineage of independent

   Scottish music. With its beguiling application of eclectic even anachronistic

   styles, sharply recalled sense and scene, it is the product of a febrile

   mind… “At the start of recording I got Scarlet Fever and stayed in bed for

   ages, reading my girlfriends books.” Explains Woodward of Lord Cut-Glass’

   creation, “I read Under Milk Wood in a feverish state and decided I would

   call myself after one of the characters”.



   Woodward’s solo project has grown incrementally over the 4 years since The

   Delgados disbanded. In between “non rock n roll” spots of gardening on his

   allotment, doses of scarlet fever and work on Chemikal Underground releases –

   including those of Aidan Moffat and The Phantom Band – the moniker ‘Lord

   Cut-Glass’ has made fleeting appearances on Chemikal’s own Ballads Of The

   Book project and the compilation Worried Noodles.



   “Musically I started writing songs with the idea of being in a band with a

   couple of other people. I asked them and they said they didn't want to, so I

   thought fuck it I'll do it all myself.”



   And so with typically casual defiance Lord Cut-Glass’ debut was recorded at

   the label’s own studio Chem 19 with former Delgados drummer Paul Savage on

   the skins, and Woodward himself writing and arranging the parts for an

   integral band of classical musicians from across Glasgow.



   “If Lord Cut-Glass was a political leader he’d be more dictator than

   democrat: more Charlemagne than Chirac” explains Woodward.

The bluesy punk duo the Kills consists of

vocalist/guitarist VV, aka Alison Mosshart, formerly of

the Florida punk band Discount, and

drummer/guitarist/vocalist Hotel, aka Jamie Hince. After

Discount ended in 2000, VV began exchanging tapes with the

London-based Hotel through the mail, but both of them felt

hindered by this method, so VV crossed the Atlantic so the

duo could write faster. In spring of 2001, they issued a

self-released demo that showcased their gritty, sexy sound

and earned favorable reviews from such quarters as TapeOp

Magazine. They also contributed a song, "Restaurant

Blouse," to 5 Rue Christine's If the Twenty-First Century

Did Not Exist It Would Be Necessary to Invent It

compilation early in 2002, before their debut EP, Black

Rooster, arrived that summer on Dim Mak. Along with gigs

at the London and Glasgow LadyFests and supporting Le

Tigre, the Kills also toured the U.S. for eight weeks

before returning to London to finish their first full-

length album, Keep on Your Mean Side, which was released

by Rough Trade in spring 2003. Their second album, No Wow,

arrived in 2005 and was an even dirtier, leaner collection

of songs. The Kills retooled their sound for 2008's

Midnight Boom, mixing in more electronic beats and pop

hooks.s

My Passion's debut album, 'Corporate Flesh Party', shows a band at the

height of their powers - driving rhythms and distorted guitar overlaid

with electronic hooks and infectious vocals and melodies. From the

driving riffs of album opener 'Crazy And Me' to the electronica punk

tinged 'Hot In the Dolls House÷, from the infectious melody of 'Plastic

Flesh Garden' to the drive of album closer 'Vultures Are People Too',

the album is a remarkable debut.



'Corporate Flesh Party' was produced by John Mitchell. The album will

   After building a solid fan base from their self-titled EP, The Perfects meld

   futuristic sounds with the melodic core of yesterday into their debut album,

   Future Automatic (FU Records), to be released on April 28, 2009.



   Founding member Ric Peters started The Perfects in 2005. Heading into the

   studio with Nic Hard in 2006 (The Bravery, The Church), The Perfects came

   back with the self-titled EP that won over critics and new fans alike.

   Top Billboard charting DJ Richard Vission remixed the single "Shipwrecked."



   While working on Future Automatic, The Perfects also remixed for other

   artists, including Mindless Self Indulgence's "What Do They Know?" on Another

   Mindless Ripoff EP. Ric Peters' penned materials are currently being

   performed on the Mindless Self Indulgence's "If Tour".



   The debut LP, Future Automatic pairs The Perfects with Nic Hard once again.

   Prior to the April 28 release date, The Perfects already found their album

   leaked online. Rather than battling the leak, The Perfects will follow the

   footsteps of Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails and make the album free for

   download. "Why fight it?" Ric Peters reasoned, "The music landscape is much

   different now so it's better to embrace the change rather than deny the

   reality and find a way to make it work for the artist" Future Automatic will

   still be available on iTunes and Amazon for fans that want to make a

   contribution.

Release Notes:



The perennially influential slacker rock trio Dinosaur Jr initially cut

swathes through alternative rock in the early 90s and, following a

well-received recent resurgence, return with their ninth LP. 'Farm' is

more aligned with the band's mid-period mix of sludgy epics and pure

pop melodies. Vocalist/guitarist and legendary grump J. Mascis sounds

somewhat brighter and more emotional than in recent times, and his

guitar work is as stellar and incendiary as ever. All in all, 'Farm'

sees Dinosaur Jr continuing to rock out inventively and satisfyingly.
