This album was a complete surprise: I knew nothing about Lana Del Ray (Lizzy Grant) when I checked out Gramma as the free track of the day, and that track and a spin through the samples sold me on the whole album.
Her voice is beautiful, and her vocal style is languid and deliberately breathy ("chantuese" fits her well); that might come off as affected for some folks, but I dig it -- and it's perfect for her overall vibe. The music itself is unique -- I've never heard anything quite like it before. If I had to pin it down, I'd go with a combination of Marilyn Monroe-style Hollywood glamor, lonely desert towns, an underlying sadness, and a sense of faded beauty -- which probably makes no sense, but it's hard to describe.
It's a mesmerizing album, and it sucks me in every time I listen to it: I listen to one track, and I have to hear the rest of the album. There isn't a single bad track, and there are several standouts (try Kill Kill, Queen of the Gas Station, and Gramma as good points of entry). The whole thing hangs together incredibly well -- give it a shot.
