Grade 12 Up–Living in post-Civil War America, Wes Cutter, a Southern rebel, has returned to Missouri after being detained in a Union prison camp. When he arrives, he finds that his home has been taken over by the Union troops who want Wes to join up with their cause. He is also searching for his wife, who is sometimes seen accompanying him, though readers sense that things are not always what they seem. The story is told in flashbacks that are not always clearly delineated. Wes is a character with questionable morals who wants to reclaim what is rightly his, and he will employ any means necessary–including excessive amounts of violence–to do so. The shadowy art is a perfect complement to this exceptionally dark Western tale. With scenes of appalling violence, coarse language, sex, rape, nudity, and racial epithets, this volume puts the graphic back into graphic novel. It will most likely find an audience with fans of Azzarello's 100 Bullets series and Garth Ennis's Preacher series

Hercules: The Knives of Kush is a five part miniseries, released through Radical Comics with each issue containing 24 pages of story. It is written by legendary comic writer Steve Moore and features the artwork of Cris Bolson. Knives of Kush is the long-awaited sequel to Steve Moore’s previous Hercules mini-series "The Thracian Wars". A reading of "The Thracian Wars" is not at all essential to understanding the plot of the second book, but obviously it will enhance the reader’s enjoyment. Following the events that occurred in "The Thracian Wars", Hercules and his band of Greek mercenaries were traveling across the Mediterranean sea, bound for the port of Piramesse in the Nile delta, with hopes of then moving on to Memphis to seek work as mercenaries. Events led them to the land of the Pharoahs, however, and this meeting of contrasting cultures and mythos--Greek mythology juxtaposed alongside Egyptian mysticism--makes for a very interesting plot. Moore's interpretation of Hercules goes back to more ancient versions and the artwork is simply fabulous, in keeping with Radical's reputation for painted comic books. Quite good.

Black Gas is a two-volume comic book mini-series written by Warren Ellis, illustrated by Max Fiumara, and published by Avatar Press from 2006 to 2007. The first volume deals with two lovers trapped on an island where a Black Gas has turned the residents into zombie-like monsters. The second volume deals with the effects of the Black Gas on the mainland. Each volume consists of three issues. Each issue was published with one standard and three variant covers (Terror, Gore, and Wraparound). Black Gas is Warren Ellis' take on the zombie mythos; as such it is ultra-violent, bloody, gory--some would even call it sick. And it predates Garth Ennis' Crossed by more than 3 years. Ellis said that "Blackgas" got its start from a request by Avatar's Editor-In-Chief William Christiansen. "William has a thing about zombies," said Ellis. "He's been after me for years to write him a zombie book. A ways back, I broke down and devised 'Blackgas,' specifically for him. It's basically me writing a book for my friend to read. Because my friend is sick in the head, it has disgusting violence and gutbusting horror in it. That's the whole deal, really. Sometimes it's just as simple as that."
