Kjaerhus Audio - MPL-1 High Precision Mastering Limiter



MPL-1 is a High Precision Mastering Limiter made for mastering and other purposes where the highest accuracy and quality are demanded. The MPL-1 uses an oversampled peak detecting algorithm to ensure that even high frequency peaks are accurately detected. This results in better high-frequency performance and it ensures that no overshoot or clipping occurs in the final D/A conversion. Look-ahead and release-smoothing (soft release-hold) assist in keeping the compression smooth and transparent, even at high compression levels.

The MPL-1 uses a new stereo linking technique that allows peaks to be limited individually on each channel, while longer lasting gain reductions are linked. This technique ensures that peaks in one channel do not produce artifacts in the other channel, while the average compression still remains the same in each channel to avoid disturbances in the stereo balance.

A PDR (Program Dependent Release) function is available to minimize pumping effects and increase loudness. The MPL-1 also offers TPDF-Dithering for 8, 16 and 24 bit output resolution. Four stereo meters show the peak input and output levels as well as compression and RMS-output.

Transmodder is a transient-driven filtering system. It can be also called a transient modification system since it allows the user to modify the audio material by means of dynamic filtering--in accordance with the transient content of the signal--delivering a spectacular sonic pronunciation and definition.

The core element of Transmodder is transient analyzer which processes narrow- or broad-band signal and detects all rising-level transients such as snare drum, bass drum, high hat hits, vocal syllables and other types of transients. In the course of detection transient analyzer generates envelope signal which replicates transient structure of the signal being analyzed. This also includes detection of differences between sharp and soft transients which generate high and low envelope levels, respectively.

Transmodder features five dynamic filters. Each can be controlled by envelope signals generated by up to two transient analyzers. The good thing about the filters used in Transmodder is that they work in a bypass mode when the envelope stays at zero causing no coloration to take place. This is especially useful in mastering applications where processing transparency is usually desirable.

The most evident purpose of this plug-in is to make the bass and high frequency content stand out in the mix or make it less noticeable. This effect is very different from what a compressor/expander does because Transmodder 'sees' transients only. So, if there is a cymbal sound, only its very beginning will be 'seen' by Transmodder: cymbal sound's body will be left unchanged. Moreover, transient detection does not depend on the absolute incoming sound level. That is why in Transmodder there is no such parameter as 'processing threshold'.

Transmodder is a useful mastering-stage plug-in. Since it is not extremely CPU consumptive it can be used in track insert slots, too. Transmodder can work extremely good with drums, guitars and bass. One of the most remarkable thing in this 'transient' processing is that in most cases it adds punch and brightness without severely affecting the overall perceived frequency balance.

How does it work?

Contrast takes a completely original approach to compression/expansion-type processing technique.

Contrast analyzes a user-defined frequency range within the spectrum of an input sound and groups the frequency components within that range according to the strength of their amplitudes. The groups are frequency components with strong amplitudes, frequency components with medium amplitudes, and frequency components with weak amplitudes. The strength of each of the groups can then be modified independently.

Why do this? Because this approach allows you to redefine the character of a sound in a powerful and original way. If you decrease the strength of the medium and weak amplitudes, thus emphasizing the strong amplitudes, for example, you'll make a sound more mellow. If you strengthen the medium amplitudes relative to the stronger and weaker amplitudes, you'll add vibrancy, liveliness, and depth to a sound. If you strengthen the weak amplitudes relative to the others, you'll make the sound more metallic, harsh, and percussive.


Equalize



Use powerful and dynamic controls to rebalance the highs, lows, and mid-range of a sound. In the stereo version of this plug-in, you can control the equalization curves of left and right channels independently or together.

How does it work?

Equalize is a 31-band graphic equalizer. Each band, controlled by a single slider, is 1/3-octave according to the ISO norm. Intuitive mouse-and-key commands are used to manipulate the slider controls easily and responsively. You can create an equalization curve with simple mouse gestures, for example, or move the curve to higher or lower frequencies, or control any number of sliders as a group. This plug-in turns an equalizer into a performance instrument.


FreqShift



Transpose or transform a sound by any combination of frequency scaling or frequency shifting.

How does it work?

Shift contains two functions that can be used separately or together. The scale function transposes a sound by multiplying each spectral component by a constant frequency.

The shift function is a frequency shifter, sometimes referred to as a single-sideband ring modulator, that adds a constant frequency to each spectral component. When you use a frequency shifter, harmonic sounds become inharmonic.

Perform a radical transformation of a sound by transposing its frequency components in a completely free and creative way.

How does it work?

Note in the screenshot above that there is a control window bordered by a horizontal bar beneath it, marked 'input', and a vertical bar to the left, marked 'output'. Note also that there is a diagonal curved line drawn through the window, with segments of the curve marked by 'junction points'.

The input bar beneath the control window shows a bar display of the frequency components of an input sound, where low-to-high frequencies are represented left to right and the intensity of the frequency components is represented by color. The output bar to the left of the control window shows a bar display of the output sound, where low-to-high frequencies are represented bottom to top and the intensity of the frequency components is represented by color density.

The diagonal line shown in the control window defines the transpositions from input sound to output sound. When the diagonal line is straight from lower left to upper right, the position of any point on the line indicates the same frequency along the input and output bars. When you click on the diagonal line, or anywhere in the control window, you create a junction point at a specific position that represents a source frequency in the input sound and a destination frequency in the output sound. You are, in effect, transferring a frequency from the input sound to a new position in the output sound, and the output sound will contain a rearrangement of the frequency components of the input sound. This can result in a radical change in timbre.

With "bucket-brigade" modeled delays, Ronin is capable of tape-style delays, true analog chorus effects, and flanging in to the stratosphere, for everything from basic subtle synced delays to complete audio destruction.

Delay Modules: Modeled after traditional analog bucket-brigade style delays, the delays in Ronin pitch the signal when the time is changed, enabling pitch bombs, chorus effects, pitch-bend flanging, or tape-style delays with time flutter. LFOs: The pair of low frequency oscillators in Ronin have four shapes: sine, sawtooth, pulse, and random. The shape control continuously varies the waveform. The LFO rate is a mod destination, so the LFO can mod itself, for very extreme waveform shapes. Both LFOs can be synced to MIDI host, and the second LFO's waveform can be reset by the first LFO.

Saturation Modules: Ronin features a pair of "tube" saturation stages, for everything from subtle smoothing to extreme tube-style distortion.

Routing Matrix: The matrices in Ronin enable full control over the signal path. Both audio and control can be routed as the user desires. In the case of audio, extreme patches are possible; nothing is forbidden. Want to route the filters back in on themselves? No problem. Want to insert distortion and resonance in the feedback loop of the delays? Help yourself. Ronin puts the routing in your hands.

MIDI Learn: Every control on the Ronin UI can be controlled via external MIDI devices. A simple key-click combination puts the UI element in learn mode; twist the knob on your controller and you're done. Another combination removes it. Simple as that.

MIDI as mod routing: MIDI note, mod wheel, and gate can be used as mod sources, in addition to the MIDI learn mode. These are available as patch points in the routing matrix.

Envelope Follower: Another mod source is the envelope section, which creates control signals from the input level of the plug-in, with separate sensitivity, attack, and decay controls.
