Die kroatische Adriaküste um 1930. Als die Mutter des 12-jährigen Branko (Jakob Knoblauch) stirbt, bricht er auf, um seinen Vater zu suchen. Dabei kommt er in eine kleine Stadt, wo ein geheimnisvolles rothaariges Mädchen die Obrigkeit in Atem hält: Die rote Zora (Linn Reusse) führt eine Bande Waisenkinder an, narrt beständig den Bürgermeister (Dominique Horwitz) und Fischgroßhändler Karaman (Ben Becker). Nur der alte Fischer Gorian (Mario Adorf) sympathisiert mit den Kindern.

Prachtvolle Neuverfilmung des Jugendbuchklassikers von Kurt Held (alias Kläber) um die Abenteuer einer Bande ausgestoßener Waisenkinder, die am Rande der Gesellschaft leben und wilde Streiche aushecken. Entdeckung Linn Reusse spielt neben Altstars wie Mario Adorf groß auf.
